ABOUT
In 1988, snowboarding culture and industry were growing rapidly. Many young people who were into snowboarding created new brands, and there were many different brands, from large companies to independent garage companies. Mike Maceda, a snowboarder and brand founder from Los Angeles, was one of them. Sharing a garage with his friends, PLAINSANE was born with the meaning of insane snowboard accessories.
Mike says, “I started the company because the sport was still so young that there’s still a lot of improvements that can be made. I needed to make accessories to make things better. This gave me the idea to start a company because I think I can make a difference."
The items that friends (riders) with alternative styles gathered together and came up with ideas to make together were full of sense and jokes derived from counter culture, such as jester hats with four horns, various fleece beanies, fire pattern gloves, and gold chain wallets. Such products full of street smell and humor became very popular with kids who were in the new school movement at the time. PLAINSANE gained a lot of support as an important piece of the street-influenced style that is often seen in snowy mountains, such as baggy pants and flannel shirts.
As the phrase in the catalog at the time said, "Plain Sane makes insane snowboard accessories and clothing," the brand continued to produce insane snow accessories and clothing, and grew to become a representative brand of the era. However, in the late 1990s, the brand was discontinued due to the sudden cooling of the overheated market. The legendary brand, which was sadly and suddenly departed, made a long-awaited comeback in the fall of 2024.
